About Braces > Retainer Instructions

The wearing of your retainer is a vital stage in your orthodontic treatment. Teeth may have a tendency to move once the braces are removed. Wisdom teeth, growth or maturational changes, mouth breathing, playing of musical instruments and other oral habits can all cause your teeth to move.

Wearing your retainers and following all of Dr Coveney’s instructions will ensure your teeth do not move. It is important to keep regular appointments with Dr Coveney for at least 4 or 5 years after the braces are removed.

If you can’t wear your retainers for any reason contact our rooms as soon as possible.

When your retainer is first fitted you may have a little difficulty in speaking, this will pass in a a day or two, providing the retainer is worn as directed and is fitting well.

Remove the Retainer
  • When you are eating.
  • Playing contact sport such as football or basketball.
  • Swimming.
  • Drinking hot drinks.
You can remove your retainer if you have a special function like a school formal, wedding or school photos. Put the retainer back in your mouth immediately after the activity or function is over. Don’t leave it out for more then a few hours.

Cleaning Instructions
  • Brush all surfaces with a toothbrush and cold soapy water (liquid soap is perfect).
  • Do not to use hot water - this will distort the retainer.

  • If it’s impossible to brush your teeth and plate, take your plate out and vigorously rinse your mouth and plate with water.
Care of Your Retainer
  • If you take your retainer out put it in the protective box provided. Don’t put your retainer in your pocket or wrap it in a tissue or napkin or you will lose it.
  • Don’t leave your retainer in a hot place like on the car dashboard, as this will distort the retainer.

  • Contact us immediately if you have any concerns or if your retainer is not fitting well.

If you lose or damage your retainer you need to contact our office as soon as possible to arrange a replacement. A fee applies for the replacement of lost or damaged retainers.

Keep Regular Appointments
Wisdom teeth, growth or maturational changes, mouth breathing, playing of musical instruments and other oral habits can all cause your teeth to move. Therefore it is important to keep regular appointments with Dr Coveney for about 4 or 5 years after the braces are removed.

Dr Coveney will check that your retainer is fitting well and is in good repair. He will monitor the stability of your teeth and monitor your wisdom teeth to ensure they do not cause your teeth to move. It is important that you bring your retainer to every appointment.
