An Upper Removable Appliance (URA) is used to provide a better relationship between the upper and lower jaws. Cooperation from the patient is essential for this appliance to work to its full capacity. WHAT TO EXPECT At first, your appliance will feel bulky in your mouth and will make speaking and eating more difficult. For the first couple of hours there will be more saliva in your mouth and swallowing will seem awkward. The appliance is removable, but you should only remove it when you eat and clean your teeth and appliance (unless Dr Coveney instructs otherwise). You should also remove your appliance when swimming and playing sport. Treatment will take about 6 months, although this can vary depending on the severity of your case. If you miss adjustment appointments or break the appliance your overall treatment time will be extended.		CLEANING It is important you brush your teeth well three times a day after meals and use a fluoride toothpaste. If possible carry a brush with you to use after lunch. Take your appliance out to floss and brush your teeth and gums. Using your toothbrush, gently brush the appliance taking care not to damage or bend the wires. If you don’t have your toothbrush with you, rinse your teeth and plates with water after eating to get rid of any food left in your mouth or on the plates. If you don’t clean your teeth and appliance you may get permanent white marks or decay of your teeth. MAINTENANCE For your orthodontic treatment to work well and in the shortest possible time it is important you take care of your teeth and the appliance. Regular appointments are required so Dr Coveney can check your progress and make adjustments to your appliance. Usually you will have an appointment every 4 to 6 weeks (unless Dr Coveney specifies otherwise). To prevent damaging your appliance, teeth or gums you should; Remove your appliance when eating. Remove your appliance when playing sport or swimming. Don’t flick the plate in and out with your tongue or fingers as this will break the wires and make it loose. This will increase your treatment time. Don’t bite your fingernails or chew on pens and pencils. Don’t drink soft drinks (including diet drinks) and excessive amounts of fruit juice while wearing your appliance. When it is not in your mouth your appliance should be in the protective box provided (not in a tissue or your pocket). If you lose your protective box please ask us for a new one. It is important you have check-ups with your regular dentist throughout orthodontic treatment to check for decay.
