Treatments > Caring for Your Braces

The key to healthy teeth and gums is proper plaque removal every day.

Plaque is the sticky colourless film of bacteria that is constantly forming on your teeth.  Left to build up, it is one of the main causes of tooth decay and gum disease.

While wearing braces, oral hygiene is more important than ever! Braces have lots of tiny spaces for food particles and plaque to get trapped.

If you do not clean well while wearing braces, plaque can cause staining of the teeth and also tooth decay.

Follow these simple instructions and you'll be off to a great start
  • Floss every day.
  • Use super floss or a floss threader makes flossing easier. The best time to floss is at the end of the day, just before brushing your teeth and going to bed.
  • Brush your teeth, gums and braces three times a day (especially after eating).
  • Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft bristled toothbrush.
  • Use a fluoride mouth rinse once a day to help reduce the risk of cavities.
  • After brushing, check your teeth in the mirror to make sure they're clean
  • Try to carry your toothbrush and floss with you at all times so that you can clean your teeth even when you are not at home.
  • Visit your general dentist every six months to have your teeth checked, cleaned and fluoridated.
